FAQ

Certificate of authenticity questions

What is a certificate of authenticity (COA) for art?

A certificate of authenticity, or COA, is a document from the artist confirming that a work is genuine. It records who made the work, what it is and when it was made, and carries the artist’s signature. Collectors, galleries and buyers keep it with the work as proof of its origin.

How do I create a certificate of authenticity for my artwork?

Fill in this free template: add the artwork, its details, your name and your signature, then download the PDF and print it. It takes a few minutes and needs no account. Keep one copy for your records and give the other to the buyer with the work.

What should a certificate of authenticity for art include?

The artist’s name, the title of the work, when it was made, its medium and dimensions, edition details for prints, a statement that the work is authentic and the artist’s signature. A photo of the work makes the certificate easy to match to the piece.

Is this certificate of authenticity template free?

Yes. Creating the certificate and downloading the PDF are free, with no account needed. You can also download it blank and fill it in by hand. The PDF carries a small markmy.art credit in its footer.

Do you store what I type?

No. The preview and PDF are drawn from what you type and nothing is saved. If you choose to continue to Markmy, we keep your draft for 14 days so it’s ready after you sign up, then delete it.

How do I sign a certificate of authenticity?

Draw or type your signature in the tool, or leave it blank and sign the printed certificate by hand in permanent ink. A handwritten signature on the printed copy is the most common choice.

Can a PDF certificate be verified?

Not on its own: anyone can copy or edit a PDF. A Markmy certificate has a permanent verification page, a QR code and an optional NFC tag that collectors scan to confirm it’s genuine.

Can I make a certificate of authenticity for prints and editions?

Yes. Choose a limited edition and enter the number and edition size, for example 3 of 20. On Markmy you can issue a numbered certificate for every print in an edition at once.
